The Little Death
May 10th, 2017

I've been watching a lot of people on various TV shows having enraptured sex, arms and legs entwined, breasts, buttocks bared.

When sex is good, we are suspended between this world and another, nothing matters but moving toward pleasure or giving it. Sometimes those two things happen in an ebb and flow of confluent connectedness and then the inevitable orgasmic disconnect from the partner happens and ultimate connection with self.

I get the feeling death is like this. Just as with the orgasm, the little death, as the French call it, we are released from gravity, we journey beyond our body, and we enter for a nanomoment or maybe two into a different state, one that knows nothing of our breakfast or bank account, what our faces look like or if we have flabby thighs. A place beyond the troubles of the hour before that may well return in a minute or two. But we are released from this earth and when we die, we do the same. It is a letting go of all that is earth-bound, weighty, judgmental, cerebral. Nothing counts, nothing matters, nothing to strive for, nowhere to go, nothing to do. It is the state of being. Just being.

At least that’s my memory.
